Before, even the thought of not being together with my ex scared me. I just couldn't imagine how devastated I would be if it comes true. I never really want to even remotely think about it... the thought was just too dreadful... so I tried my very best to be as good as a girlfriend as I possibly could... trying to make him happy.

But when it actually happened, I thought I would never be able to continue. I felt so lost. I lost him and I also lost myself. I found out without him, I didn't know what I want. Basically all my life goals had something to do with him or our future. In order for me to make a decision, I would contemplate to see if this decision of mine would be beneficial to him. I wanted to "plan" our life so that everything could fall into place as we progress with our careers... and make it easier for him. Because I was so into setting this heart-warming image in my head of us together, I forgot to even do a reality check... to see if he was also on board.

When I found out he was not, it was too late. He made a decision of his own already.

Now, things have settled. We are apart. It's a fact. He is not going to come back. That's a fact.

I'm fine. And I'm going to be fine... Because I need to continue to explore what life has to offer.

(And may I say, shopping is one hell of a good therapy? I think the retail industry is grateful of my ex. I blew my year-end bonus + commission on 3 pairs of ballet flats, a coat, and a dress, and some accessories after that dream of mine. All these cost me an arm and a leg... and perhaps a head, as well! but I have to admit... I feel much better after!! )

"What will happen if you ditch me and no longer want me?"
"No, I won't, because I can never find a good reason to leave you..."

Just when I thought I was over it... I dreamed of this flashback last night. This is what he said when I was asking him what happened if one day he gets tired of me.

And I woke up this morning with tears on my pillow and tear marks on my face. (Apparently, you can cry in your dreams.)

What I have been trying hard to hold down in the subconscious has found its way to burst through... as if consciously suppressing is not enough.

(I guess he must have found a good reason.)

Recently, I noticed my closest girl friends have undergone different changes on their love life. As you will see, they are presenting different kind of love attitudes in nowadays. Correct me if I'm wrong, I think my attitude is pretty outdated and too conservative!

"N"
She always wants to date young professionals but all her previous boyfriends... (not even sure if I could address them as her BFs because they never make it 'official' with her) She recently met an orthodontist and she fell head-over-heel for him. He takes relationship very seriously as he is in his early thirties... he is also looking for a wife. Things between them are looking good, as you know, when the other person also has feelings for you...that feeling is the sweetest. I thought he would be a great match for her: He is a young professional who is very serious about making someone his wife. BUT!!! He made it very clear to her that while he is dating her, he HAS TO also date other girls. He explains, he needs to make a WISE and INFORMED life decision and by dating all these different girls simultaneously, he will be able to pick the best girl with the best wife-qualities. He told her, if things didn't work out between [N] and him, it would mean, they are not meant to be.... it would be "part of life". After I heard what N had told me, all I could say was "I applaud him for being honest but he is a real fxxxing jerk. He is justifying his multi-dating behavior and you are just ONE OF HIS MANY WOMEN!! How can you even want to be with him?!" She believes what he said was true and she is willing to 'compete' with others for his love.

She has a good and stable relationship with her boyfriend for a couple years. She is the kind of girl who is very afraid to be bored. Back then, she would change her boyfriend whenever she feels she is not getting any excitement from her guy. She had "overlapped" 2 guys before (meaning dating 2 at the same time). Her current boyfriend is her longest one. She even admits to me she didn't even know why she would stick around that long. She thought she was getting older so that's why she needs to be with someone for long. However, 2 months ago, she fell in love with her co-worker but the thing is, this colleague of her is married. A newly-wed guy. He is so in love with his wife where he is doing all the chores at home for her so she wouldn't need to lift a finger (Frankly, that sounds too weird for me) . My friend is yearning for something she can't have, and that makes it very exciting for her. I have been trying to make her see what a good boyfriend she has by her side, but I think her fear of being bored had tempted her to ruin someone else's marriage. Whenever she asks me if she should send that married guy a gift or stuff... I would tell her to stop wasting time. She is missing something good she already has. She didn't like my comments but then I think she knows if she actually ruined that guy's marriage and ended up being with him, she would get bored after a while. Then what?? I was so relieved that she finally listens and stop doing anything stupid. Now she is back to her boyfriend. I guess making her see "You don't know what you got until it's gone" actually works. (CHEESY? YES, but it's the truth.)

She and her boyfriend were so in love on the outside but inside, she had told me her boyfriend has no plans to move the relationship any further. Because her boyfriend doesn't believe in marriage, she knows she is not going to be able to change him. She tries to change her belief for him. She tries to make herself NOT want to get married with him. But she realizes she can't. She wants to make it official. Her boyfriend had confessed that he wanted no one but her, but she knows it is a moment of passion. He is younger than her and in every way, his behavior is not matching up to her. He is not aggressive enough but she always wants to get ahead of things. They argued and take time apart a lot. She knows this is not going to change... even marriage would not change. She decided to end the relationship all together. She was heart-broken even though she initiated it but she told me she wanted someone who is willing to commit. She told me my breakup had scared her a bit. My ex and I were stable but he could all of a sudden just take off like that. She is afraid without the "official seal", she will have nothing left to guarantee the years they spent together if he, one day, decides to go for another woman.

"V"
She is always the "power player" in a relationship. All the men she had been with, treated her like a queen. She earns a lot and she knows how to spend her money. Her dating history includes successful bankers, charter accountants....etc. She only date older men because she knows she will get pampered like a queen (younger guys, she will need to take care of them). And needless to say, some of these men are married men. She is very smart and she never needs a man to buy expensive bags and clothes for her because she could take care of them herself.... in a way, she is not dependent at all. Men can come and go but she will always have fancy clothes! She recently dated an pro-athlete. This guy wanted to impress her by wearing all those expensive watches... Rolex, Patek Phillippe, Raymond Weil...etc when they go out. But during one of their getaways, she discovered that the majority of his watches are fake. She was furious and she flew back by herself the next day. She was mad that he lied straight to her face when she confronted him. She doesn't know why this guy needs to buy fake watches in order to please her. She told me she would still be with him if he was just wearing a normal watch. I guess, maybe it's the image she is portraying to others?

If you were me, what would you say to each of my friends?

I always feel content that my love life was stable... yes, WAS. I never liked the idea of "wondering eyes" while you are dating your current one. Again, perhaps my dating belief is way too simple and conservative for the current days but I believe if I'm in love, I should be putting all my faith and trust in this person. Risky as putting all eggs in one basket? Yes, but if you invest all your eggs in different baskets, when are you going to have enough to fill all baskets? At the end of the day, you will have many baskets but half-filled.

Have been feeling sick for days... I had to work with a face mask on because I didn't want to "spread my love". I even went into meetings for 3 consecutive days with my customers with my mask on. Now, THAT shows I'm diligent! HA HA!

Anyways, people always say when you are sick, you would be in the most fragile state. I thought I would be missing my ex more during this time. Apparently not. I didn't think of him once for a week. Perhaps my meds and my clouded-up head (because of my heavy cold) had blocked all little traces of him in my mind. I've never felt so peaceful in my head. Working hard in meeting after meeting, I had no down time. In between work, I would be blowing my nose.

My heavy cold/flu had made me more productive than ever!

From one of my favorite blogs, LE LOVE...

When you are in a relationship, you have a one-track mind: your boyfriend. When you break up, you have a one-track mind: your ex-boyfriend. At what point do you forget the past and start thinking only about ME? You don’t have to think about your past; you don’t have to think about what is gone; you don’t have to think about the love you are missing out on. It is better to be free than be enslaved by a tumultuous relationship; some love can’t be repaired. Yet after you are out of it, you don’t know how to be free. It is a paradox. You are too paralyzed to move because you are venturing into the unknown. Standing still is the initial reaction because you don’t know where else to go. You are abandoned in the blistering cold.

There is far too much life to live fully and alone to dwell on the what-if. Time quickly passes that you can never recover. I don’t want to live with regret. Dwelling and pitying has eaten a year of my life. A year. 365 days. I could have done a million things in a year, but I did nothing. Never again.

This is encouraging and inspiring.

"You can love again, but you can't live again".

I accidentally came across my old blog last night. The last entry was on September 18, 2008, and it said...

The 3 days after our "break", we decided it was pretty stupid. We already do not have enough time.... and we will definitely taking a LONG break when I leave. So .... might as well treasure what we have left and enjoy it.

My ex and I dated for 2 years and then I had to move away for better career opportunities. We did discuss of moving together but everytime, this topic would go sour. He never asked me to stay directly at that time. At first, I thought he was the most generous and understanding boyfriend, but at the same time, the fact that he didn't ask me to stay made me a bit sad (Though he did ask me if I could stay when I flew back to see him). Again, I thought this move would be temporary and there would be a mutual understanding that I would be back for him when he is ready to "take us to the next step".

Looking at this old blog of mine, it brought up a lot of somewhat painful memories. I realized how desperate I was, and helpless at the same time, to try to hold onto him. The more desperate I was, the more arguments we had. This "3-day break" was the result of it. We were both exhausted and deeply saddened by my departure. He was at the same time moving to a new place. I spent all my focus and energy on his new place because I didn't want to think that I would be leaving him soon. I remembered I counted backward every single day to see how much time I had left with him before my move. It was like a countdown... a countdown to something really bad. The dread and pressure of the "departure" made me sleepless and teary all the time. He didn't notice. He thought I was becoming more and more clingy, and not strong enough.

I read up on a lot of long-distance relationship articles on how to making it work. I was fed up with my friends when they said LDR won't work...

Bottomline, separation is not an easy thing to swallow. So when u have a friend(s) who is going through a long-distance relationship, please don't tell them "Oh... I'm sorry... LDR never works out..." because you are not only going to add pressure to ppl's relationship, you might actually affect someone's emotions and lead to their breakup. Indirectly, you proved your point that it won't work out but at the same time you have costed someone a chance to love and be loved.

I was very desperate. I didn't want the negativity to win. I wanted to prove them wrong, wanted to prove to everyone, including myself that true love can conquer all. As mentally strong and determined I was to make us work, I never thought or even expect that he didn't want the same thing. I guess that's why when this breakup came, I fell hard, really hard to a point where I doubt I would ever get back up. Everyone said I was stupid for not being able to detect his behavioral change earlier, and more stupid to believe in long-distance relationship would work. Call me naive but I still believe it will work, as long as two people BOTH truly want to make it work.

Finally, after I left, I flew back to see him whenever I can get away with. I flew 3 long-haul flights the first year... the 2nd year, I only flew once, and he wanted a breakup. I did all the things that said would be beneficial to LDR... such as webcam, so both parties will be able to share their day's happening, celebrate important dates together... "dinner dates" and "movie dates"... etc. He slowly didn't want to go webcam. That's fine, I thought he wanted to rest or hang out with his friends. But he ended up letting me know that it was too mundane for him. I thought I was not doing enough... even though I was exhausted. At the back of my mind, I knew this should be a two-way, team work thing... then "why the hell am I here doing all the work, trying to hold onto this relationship? Why can't he understand?" This thought immediately got kick out of my mind, and replaced with "how can I be a better girlfriend?"

As long as you are both interested in being in the relationship, you will stick with it and distance will not make a difference. As soon as one of you decides the other is not a good match - or someone else is a better match - your relationship ends, whether you live 3000 miles apart, two streets over, or share the same bed with your wedding picture on the wall. You are going to have to trust each other completely if this relationship is going to work. "

I trusted him that he would bring me back to him.

Turns out, it was a lot of work for nothing.

I had a good December as my closest friends came to visit and we had a very good time. It's hard to live in a place where you don't have too much friends and you will get lost in your train of thoughts....well, mainly sad. But this December had made me leave all my sad thoughts (originated from the breakup). It was liberating.

A new year came around and I realized I'm starting to have a crush on someone new. I know it's not going to happen but somehow it's quite refreshing to know that I actually can like someone else. For the whole time I was with my ex, I never liked anyone else. Now that I actually LIKE someone new, made me feel somewhat excited. The last time I actually had a crush on someone was with my "unofficial boyfriend" in university. It was long ago. I never thought I would go back to the "I have a crush on you" route. I thought I was too old for that already.

I'm not getting high hopes on this new guy because I know this is just an infatuation. He is too good-looking and I think he is a big flirt. I always tease about the fact how women will crazily flock to their personal trainer... and here I am, starting to have a crush on my yoga instructor. *embarrassed* Every class, he would come over to fix my posture. Yes, every class... Out of a class of 20+ women, he would come to me (even when I was minding my own business in the corner, hiding behind those who were not too good in holding the poses) several times to guide my postures. He guided me 4-5 times per class while he guides others once or none. At first, I thought "Do I suck THAT BAD in yoga?! He didn't fix other people this much in the class..." So I tested by moving away from the front, and try to station myself at different places in the room for each class, he would still "detect" me and come over to "fix" me... with the WARMEST SMILE. Then I started to feel somewhat ... weird. Questions start to fill my head, like "why me?" But then the logical side of me pulls me back in.... "This is just an infatuation. It will go away." or "maybe he wants you to continue to come to classes so he will have more business and reputation" or "he is too good-looking to be straight"... etc.

Surprisingly, I believe all that. I know it will go away. I think I have become more cautious and I really cannot afford to fall head-over-heels anymore. I'm at a point in my life where I should be looking for someone to get marry to, not to have a crush on.

Yes, simple as that. That's all I want. I wish all of you out there the same for 2011.

And be lucky in love.
